Simon Pell goes to South Africa to meet the orphans of Nkandla to see for himself the work being done by Sister Hedwig and her colleagues...
Early this summer Simon Pell flew to South Africa to spend three days in Nkandla.
The purpose of the visit was to learn more about the work of Sister Hedwig and her colleagues and to see how the money raised by staff and P&B is being spent. Simon expressed his admiration and thanks to all the Sisters and the Nardini Convent for the valuable work they are doing to educate communities and care for sick adults and their children.
Simon’s tour began with a visit to the hospital where he spent some time visiting children in different wards. After completing the tour of the hospital, he visited a nearby village and saw first hand two houses that have been build using money raised by P& B. Pell & Bales has raised money for the orphans through a number of staff fundraising initiatives including the annual Bedford – London bike ride, the 100-mile walk and sponsorship days.
There was much excitement when Simon went to visit the local school and spent time playing with the children and talking to staff. He learned here that the one of the most valuable gifts they can receive is schoolbooks to promote literacy and equip children with the knowledge and skills that would help them prevent the spread of Aids in later life.
On his return to the UK Simon Pell said “ I spent a lot of time with the community and got to know their hardships; but I also learned a great deal about what we can do in the future to help them”. A number of staff trips are being organised in 2006 for staff to visit Nkandla.
